Denstone College Pre-Prep | A Firm Foundation

Set in its own dedicated buildings within the beautiful grounds of Denstone College Prep School at Smallwood Manor, boys and girls aged 4 – 7, can begin their exciting learning journey.

The Pre-Prep offers a homely, supportive and friendly environment that is educationally stimulating and exciting. This ensures that children feel happy, self-confident and open to learning and ultimately enjoy coming to school.

Small class sizes in the Pre-Prep allow children to progress at their own pace, whilst still ensuring that each child receives the individual attention and careful guidance they need to allow them to reach their potential. Carefully made decisions and planning are bespoke to your child which will encourage the development of the skills needed for a smooth transition into our Prep School and beyond.

Facilities

Our indoor and outdoor spaces have been created to provide a wonderful learning environment for children.  Our Pre-Prep pupils make full use of all the facilities of the Main school such as the indoor pool, Chapel, Gymnasium, ICT Suite, outdoor classroom, astro pitches and sports fields. Playtime takes place in the large walled garden.

Dedicated, Experienced Staff

The Pre-Prep team provide a warm, supportive environment with dedicated and experienced staff. Every child is valued and encouraged to fulfil their learning potential. Small class sizes allow staff to focus on and nurture each individual child.

The Pre-Prep Curriculum

Our bespoke hands-on curriculum provides an exciting and fun relationship with learning. The curriculum is designed to challenge and stimulate the imagination and provide a firm foundation for your child’s ongoing education.  Literacy and Numeracy are taught each morning, providing a strong base on which to build reading, spelling, writing and mathematical skills.  We also work to provide ‘hooks’ to allow children to build up a net of general knowledge.

The children are also encouraged to develop their independent learning skills through the wider curriculum.  This encompasses lessons in a whole host of subjects from Science, Geography and History projects through to RE/PSHE, Music, Art, Design and Technology, ICT and the performing arts.  Your child will also have regular Sports lessons making the most of DCPS superb facilities including weekly Swimming and use of the astro pitches and gymnasium.

Independence and self-confidence are also encouraged through a busy calendar of events such as Harvest and Easter concerts, Chapel assemblies, Nativity plays, Grandparents’ days and Sports days.

Cross-Curricular Approach

We aim to bring learning to life and deliver an inspiring curriculum using topic based learning each term. The curriculum is then enriched through many real experiences, including visiting theatre workshops, trips to the Space Centre or being a pirate for the day!

Outdoor Education

The Pre-Prep takes full advantage of the beautiful surroundings at DCPS and often takes learning outdoors. Weekly Forest School sessions also enable the children to discover and learn about our outside world and environment whilst developing lifelong skills such as teamwork and perseverance.

Co-Curricular Activities

Our daily curriculum can also be enriched with a range of co-curricular activities, from instrumental tuition to LAMDA, Dance and Football, Tennis coaching to Bug club to name a few. We have a range of clubs to appeal to all and to encourage children to discover skills and talents beyond the curriculum.

School Day

The school day takes place from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Before and After School Care as well as Pre-Prep clubs can extend the day from 8.00am to 6.00pm.

Open Days and Tours

We hold regular open days and tours to allow parents and their children to come and meet headteacher, Jerry Gear and the rest of our teaching staff and look around our extensive facilities.
