Healthy Home-cooked School Meals
However, there’s more to meal times than just eating. At Denstone Preparatory School, staff and pupils eat together as one big family, with older children helping to serve the younger ones. Grace is said before and after the meal and we believe that sitting down together for meals helps to foster a sense of community and encourage good manners.
This is particularly important for our younger pre-prep pupils who are taught in the quadrangle, away from the main site. By coming together to eat, they already know their way around the main school building, which helps to make the move to the prep-school less daunting when the time comes.

Our new Catering Manager, Mrs Day, provides an excellent menu of home cooked casseroles, pasta and sauces, pizzas and pies. Meat of the highest quality from local farmers, delivered fresh and daily, is used and there is always a vegetarian option as well as homemade soup in the winter months. A choice of fresh fruit or wholesome puddings are served daily. No sweets are allowed in school as a selection of healthy snacks, water, fruit juices, milk and hot chocolate are provided at break-time. The Food Committee, comprising the Catering Manager, staff and pupils, meet regularly.

In accordance with the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU FIC 2014), parents are advised that food prepared on the school site may contain one or more of the following 14 food allergens:
Celery (including Celeriac), Cereals containing gluten, Crustaceans, Eggs, Fish, Lupin and Lupin flour, Milk, Molluscs, Mustard, Nuts, Peanuts, Sesame Seeds, Soya and Sulphur dioxide preservative.
Mrs Day keeps a list of dishes provided and their allergen content should parents wish to see this.
Meat Free Monday’s
The Food Council, made up of pupil members, voted for a Meat Free Monday. This is an idea launched by Paul McCartney’s family following the 2006 United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization report highlighting the environmental impact of meat eating. In 2009, Paul and his daughters, Mary and Stella, launched the Meat Free Monday campaign to raise awareness of the damaging environmental impact of eating meat, and to encourage people to slow climate change, conserve precious natural resources and improve their health by having at least one meat free day each week.
