Form 3 have been using Smallwood’s beautiful woodlands to help with their maths understanding. Working as ‘place value’ pirates, they went into the grounds to find leaves with evidence of ‘The Black Spot’ on them! They then used these leaves to create 3,4 and 5 digit numbers for their maths lesson. They also collected conkers, acorns, pine cones, twigs, leaves and pebbles to help with their understanding of estimation and counting in groups. As a final challenge they had to complete the ‘Leafy Tower of Hanoi’ puzzle which they managed to solve in 7-steps. Watch out parents; I expect they will be testing you with the puzzle at home! All you will need is a big, medium and small sized leaf and a 1×3 grid!
