Drama & Theatre: Stimulating the Imagination
Drama, theatre and productions form a vibrant element of life at Denstone College Preparatory School and Pre-School.  As well as stimulating the imagination, drama and theatre offers pupils an array of benefits, including building confidence, enhancing communication skills, discipline and memory – and of course, drama and theatre are great fun!

At Denstone College Preparatory School, pupils in the Main Prep School receive weekly drama and theatre lessons. There is also the opportunity to work with a specialist teacher, who follows the acclaimed LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) ‘Speaking Verse and Prose’ syllabus. Our pupils routinely pass the course with distinction or merit.

Our Pre-Prep children get their first taste of live performance at the end of Michaelmas term when they take part in our annual Nativity play.  This is an inclusive introduction to drama and theatre on stage that allows every child to perform in front of their parents, families and friends.

Once in the Main Prep, children then have the opportunity to take their drama and theatre to the next level by taking part in our annual school plays. Over the years a wide range of dramatic productions and musicals have been performed including ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘The Wind in the Willows’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Oliver!’ and ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. Junior plays (Year 3 and 4) have included ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, ‘Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations’, ‘Lady Lollipop’ and ‘Persephone’.

As well as performing, pupils have the opportunity to take part in backstage activities, such as painting scenery, designing costumes and making props.  They also learn about lighting, sound equipment and general stage management to ensure that everything goes smoothly on the night.
