On Wednesday September 25th the team played their first away fixture of the season in Leicestershire.  It was a hard battle from the first whistle but much of the play remained in the opposition’s half where captain Ella H tackled valiantly while Gaby, in her very first ever hockey match, played with skill and poise on the left to make some great crosses into the D. In fact it was a very warm day for hockey on such a large pitch but all members of the team battled hard. By half time Smallwood were 1 – 0 up and were glad to take a much needed break.

In the second half Smallwood moved up a gear and stuck well to their task. Poppy N took the place of Gaby on the left and had much to do, showing some fine stick skills. The whole team pushed forward and even the full-backs were closing in on the edge of the D. Abi and Caitlin successfully fed the ball into the danger areas with some lovely clean,  powerful push passes whilst Poppy F and Ella P pounced on their opportunities to score a further three goals. A great game for all except perhaps for goalkeeper Charlotte who didn’t touch the ball once!
