On Wednesday May 21st the Smallwood U10 girls travelled to Cheshire for two great games of Rounders on a gloriously sunny afternoon. With the Y6 girls away enjoying themselves at PGL, it was a chance for the Y5s to rise to a challenge: both opposition teams were U11 level.

Smallwood played Edenhurst first. Captain Rebecca elected to field first after winning the toss and, leading her team by example, kept a tight rein on proceedings. Accurate bowling and some steady work at backstop by Emilia gave little away. There was some great concentration in the field  and the positional play made life hard for Edenhurst. After one innings of 27 good balls, Smallwood had a target of 5 rounders to chase. Rebecca gave the team a flying start and, as confidence grew, more rounders followed with some great running by Camilla and Izzy B to give Smallwood a well-earned victory by 5 – 8.

The second match against hosts Terra Nova was a tight affair.  Smallwood were put into bat and couldn’t quite find the form of the previous game and set TN a target of 4 to beat. The fielding remained reliable, however, and with 3 balls left Smallwood were still leading. However, TN suddenly found their batting form and made a final surge to pip Smallwood at the post with a narrow win 5 – 4.
