U9 hockey tournament at Old Vicarage School – Wednesday 5th Oct

DCPS finish as semi finalists

The Under 9 girls played their first hockey tournament at OVS. Drawn in a group against Wellow House and St Wystan’s School, DCPS girls showed their dominance with a 7 – 0 victory against Wellow House and a 2 – 0 victory over St Wystan’s. This left DCPS topping their group and led them into the semi-finals.  Up against St Bede’s school, DCPS now tiring from their endeavours earlier in the tournament were unable to break down St Bede’s dogged defence. The match went to penalties and a 1-1 scoreline meant we had to go to a coin toss due to time limits. St Bede’s successfully chose correctly and  went on to win the tournament 1 – 0.

The squad of Captain Verity B; Esther B; Tilly D; Daisy H; Verity H; Evangeline P; Isla S and Darcie W had a fantastic afternoon and bearing in mind the girls had never played together as a team or on astro before, they showed themselves as immensely adaptable and displayed just what superb teamwork can achieve! Wonderful hockey was played by all and the girls were just unlucky to miss out on the final.

At the end of the day, the seven schools that entered the tournament were each asked to nominate a player of the tournament. Over 50 girls had played, however, each school overwhelmingly nominated Darcie W as the girls hockey player of the tournament, a thoroughly deserved accolade for her effort, determination and skill as well as her many goals throughout the afternoon.  She went home wearing her medal with pride and the other girls of DCPS loudly applauded and supported their teammate. A fantastic attitude from all!

DCPS girls however, felt that there was a different girl of the game for her effort throughout the afternoon as they voted Evangeline P as their own girl of the games.

Girl of the tournament: DCPS’s own Darcie W.
