Wednesday October 2nd heralded our return hockey fixture with Terra Nova School in Cheshire. As we suspected they might, T.N. fielded a different and stronger team than at our first meeting and the game was the U11’s biggest challenge to date. The opposition, having learnt their skills on astro-turf, proved to be technically adept and they soon scored to go ahead. Smallwood didn’t lose heart however. Poppy F. ran and tackled tirelessly and even when she took a nasty bash to the hand, was bravely determined to stay on the pitch. Smallwood were eventually rewarded for their efforts and before half time managed to equal the score.

In the second half, Smallwood gradually began to come through. Emma replaced the hard working Allie, on the left, and showed great positional sense to pull the defence wide. Captain Ella H. made some great interceptions whilst the movement of Caitlin and Abi E. provided reliable defence. Smallwood were rewarded for their persistence and Ella P. scored 2 more goals to make it a great hat-trick on the day.

Heart stopping moment of the match: Nikki, in goal for the first time, found herself one on one with T.N. centre forward only to make a fantastic kick clear. Well done Nikki!
