Smallwood’s final home fixture on grass was played on Tuesday December 3rd against Lichfield Cathedral School at Under 11/10.

Pitch conditions were excellent (due to the much appreciated hard work of the groundsmen) and Smallwood got off to a good start. Rebecca and captain Ella H. dominated in the middle of the field while Poppy F. and Ella P. provided lively support on the wings. Poppy M. tried a new position: goal – hanger. The formation worked a treat and the Lichfield goal was bombarded with shot after shot. Several strikes went just wide of the post but many were saved by the opposing goalkeeper who had a stunning performance throughout the game. However, despite this, Poppy F., Poppy M. and Ella P. each managed to score and by half -time Smallwood were 3 – 0 up.

Changes at the break saw Ella P. move to centre high striker and Poppy M. move out to the wing. The second half continued much as the first. Caitlin stayed alert in defence while the speedy Poppy F. worked tirelessly, making some clever runs on the right demonstrating much improved skill on the ball. Indeed the girls probably passed the ball better than in any previous games and worked excellently as a whole unit. Ella P. grabbed two more goals to make a hat-trick, Poppy F. got a well-deserved second and Abi was allowed a little trot out from her usual position at left back to finish off the match with her first ever goal for Smallwood.

The chilly goal-keeper, poor patient Charlotte, didn’t touch the ball once throughout the game, but still it was a very satisfying result.  All the hard work of the term, on stick skills, passing and positioning, appeared to be coming together…..dash it, just as we start to think about netball – always the same!

Anyway, as the girls keep saying, “Unbeaten on grass this season.” Well done!
