Hockey v Terra Nova
On Wednesday September 11th Smallwood girls welcomed Terra Nova for the opening fixture of the season.
Smallwood looked sharp from the start, showing speed and determination. Great tackling and strong clears by defenders Caitlin and Abi kept Smallwood goalkeeper Charlotte out of the action and their well-timed interventions provided the attacking trio of Nikki , Ella P and Poppy with impressive support. Captain Ella H worked tirelessly in midfield linking the team together. Centre forward Ella, and Poppy on the right wing, combined well to threaten the Terra Nova goal time and again. Smallwood took their chances and by half time, the home side were already 6 – 0 up.
Half time changes saw Jenny come on at left wing and Caitlin move to centre half. Smallwood held their shape and continued to dominate with Jenny showing some good footwork and composure on the wing. However, Smallwood didn’t quite dominate as before and had to be content with one more goal.
A promising start!
Smallwood 7- 0 Terra Nova
Captain Camilla led a solid team performance in the U10’s first match of the season. An early Smallwood goal gave the home side confidence and they soon settled into the game. Olivia, Poppy and Emilia fought hard in defence while Camilla and Rebecca busied themselves in midfield. In addition, wingers, Alicia and Holly made some great runs. However, before the break, Terra Nova managed to even the score.
At half time Abigail came on at left wing and impressed with some composed play and good passing of the ball. As the game continued, Rebecca made a superb run and struck the ball cleanly into the goal only for it to be disallowed – it had been scored from outside the D. Smallwood held their nerve and kept battling. The game ended in a draw but it was a great learning experience from which the U10s can build. More work is needed on going to meet the ball when defending and more work on spacing and positional play will help to give the team a more organised approach.
Well done – a great start!
