Great Poems!

Mrs McKenzie and I were really impressed with the standard that everybody reached when performing their poems this week. Everybody held their nerve and spoke clearly and confidently, indicating the hard work they'd obviously put into learning their pieces. Very best of luck to all the finalists!

U11 Football v Abbotsholme

The U11s finally managed to get a well overdue fixture after the recent poor weather - against Abbotsholme. Although we ran into an early 3-0 lead, Abbotsholme battled away very determined not to concede more and managed to get one back before half time. Our first half performance saw us a little less composed on the [...]

Tasting Fruit

As part of our new topic in science, LIFE CYCLES, we are learning about the role that fruit and seeds play in keeping a species going. We spent some time revising what we know about plants and what the main parts of a plant are. We then studied which parts of a plant we eat, [...]

Helen Keller

Last Wednesday, Pre-Prep 2 worked hard to imagine what life was like for Helen Keller. They learned how Helen became ill as a young child and how when she recovered, her parents discovered she was both blind and deaf.  Fortunately, they found a wonderful teacher for Helen; Annie Sullivan gained Helen's trust and taught her [...]

Lewis and Taylor Visit Pre-Prep

Reception and Pre-Prep had a lovely visit on Thursday from Mr and Mrs Elkin and their two guide dogs Taylor and Lewis. Mrs Elkin told us that it costs £55,000 to train each dog to become a guide dog for the blind. Mr Elkin showed us how he puts a special harness on Lewis so [...]

Saint Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine's Day Reception had a busy and enjoyable afternoon decorating heart shaped biscuits. They decorated them with icing and sweets then wrapped them in lovely paper to give to someone special.  I am not sure whether that special person will have received the biscuits or if they were eaten by the person who decorated [...]

Pre-Prep 2 faced a great challenge last week! They worked together in teams of four to create a winter picture. Each child was given a quarter of the picture to copy onto a piece of card. They  worked with the other three children in their team to ensure that all four parts fitted together to [...]

Smallwood Rap

This week our English classrooms have been transformed into a recording studio, as Year 5 wrote and performed their 'Smallwood Rap'. We have been studying poetry as part of the school's poetry festival and have focused this week's learning on performance poetry. We performed a poem called 'Space Rap', which inspired us to write our own [...]

Soldiers at Smallwood

Yesterday Mr Westerman took assembly; it was about self discipline. He was gently asking questions about the word discipline when suddenly a frightening, booming voice started shouting commands from the back and a small troop of soldiers marched into chapel. We all jumped out of our skins! They certainly were well disciplined and well drilled and an [...]

Aztec Food Tasting – Mmmmmmm!

Form 3 were not sure what to expect this morning when they were told that they would be sampling some 'Aztec' foods. Considering that last week we had spent the lesson finding out about some of the yuckier things the Aztecs were partial to (monkeys, ants, pond scum, dogs, maggots to name a few), I [...]
