Monthly Archives: October 2013

Pre-Prep had a fantastic time at the disco, dancing and playing games non stop.  Thank you to Dave Dee for making it so much fun and to Friends of Smallwood for giving us this great treat.

Senior Girls Win Again

A team from Chase Grammar School, Cannock visited us on Tuesday October 15th. Despite a good deal of rain in the previous twenty-four hours causing a sticky surface, the pitch was in fine condition allowing a good standard of hockey to be played by all.

Captain Ella H. won the toss and chose first push back. […]

Fantastic Fossils!

Pre-Prep 2 have had great fun investigating fossils. As well as making mystery fossils using Plaster of Paris, the children enjoyed using jelly to create edible fossils. Each layer of jelly represented a layer of rock and each layer had a selection of sweet fossils. They looked wonderful but I did not […]

Another Great Win for the Senior Girls

Our very first match on astro-turf took place at Lichfield Hockey Club on Friday October 11th. Although the girls had practised for this game, controlling and passing the ball on the faster surface of the tennis courts, it is still always a shock to the system to change from playing on grass to a spacious […]

Better Performance from the Under 11 Rugby Team

Although Smallwood came up against another strong team, they had a much better match than the previous one. The backs played well in defence but spent so much time defending that they lost their formation. We had very little ball from the set piece again but the pack were more involved in […]

Under 11 Rugby v Grace Dieu

As usual Grace Dieu arrived with a very strong team.  Their strong direct running broke through our tackling and the game was taken away from Smallwood after ten minutes.

Rugby is a difficult game when defending all the time and so it proved. Paddy and Nick tackled well but needed more support. The flow of the game led to a […]

Girls Play Well to Win

Smallwood dominated from the off with the very inexperienced opposition learning as they went along in their very first game of hockey. As such this game gave the Smallwood players a chance to play different roles on the pitch, as they continually rotated positions.  Francesca F. and captain Camilla made some determined runs, Poppy M […]

Senior Girls Continue Their Unbeaten Run

On Wednesday October 9th Smallwood girls visited Abbotsholme for a game on the grass.  Captain Ella H. started at right back, giving Caitlin another chance to demonstrate her skills at centre half – which she did with aplomb. Later in the game as legs became weary, Ella returned to the central position, once again producing […]

Water Water Everywhere

Pre-Prep enjoyed a visit from Edwina, from Severn Trent Water, who told us about saving water. We have all promised to be `water savers` and not `wasters`.  We have all been given a timer so our showers are less than 4 minutes.

Our Harvest Festival next Tuesday and Wednesday is all about […]

Investigating quadrilaterals

Form 3 have been investigating 2D shapes, particularly quadrilaterals and irregular shapes, by using peg boards. They have really enjoyed using them and rose to the challenge of creating a nonagon!
